Since opening in 2012, Hamilton’s Flagship Gallery (http://semaphore.ca/flagship-gallery) has been a home for art created by those who work from a “broadly conceived Christian worldview.” One of its recent exhibits, AXIS, features photography and poetry by James Tughan, one of those involved with the start-up of the gallery.

Irish, a published poet and playwright, add children’s author to her credits with the publication of The Great Carp Escape. Irish, who grew up in the Okanagan, now lives in Calgary.

Write! Canada (https://thewordguild.com/events/write-canada) is the largest, and probably longest-running national writers’ conference. With ever-increasing attendance numbers,  organizers have had to move the conference from the cozy confines of the Guelph Bible Conference Centre to the Novotel building in downtown North York. With me tonight are two key players in the conference: journalists Bill Fledderus, who is one of the two keynote speakers, and Lisa Hall-Wilson, who is also the conference assistant director.

Margo Swiss (http://wipfandstock.com/the-hatching-of-the-heart.html) latest work, a collection of poems that have been described as “devout, intense, often heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting.” The Hatching of the Heart is the latest collection of poetry by Swiss, who teaches English and Creative Writing at York University in Toronto, has published academically on Milton and Donne and has had her poems appear in magazines, anthologies and two other collections.

Arts Connection for Monday May 4, 2015 - Laila Biali - Laila Biali & The Radiance Project new CD "House of Many Rooms"

Tonight’s guest has performed with Sting, Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega. A native of Vancouver and a resident of New York City, jazz pianist Laila Biali (http://theradianceproject.com) recently released the Laila Biali & The Radiance Project's first CD: House of Many Rooms which features songs that explore grief, loss, longing and expectation. When we talked to her, Laila was in the midst of a lengthy tour promoting the CD and called us from Banff, Alberta to talk about her music.

Arts Connection for Monday April 27, 2015 - Jason Brown - Jason & Charmaine Brown new CD "Sunrise is Coming"

Charmaine Brown had a successful career as a solo musician, recording a couple CDs and garnering multiple Canadian GMA award nominations. But even the support of her husband, Jason, couldn’t keep her from becoming disappointed and disillusioned with the music industry. Charmaine took a brief hiatus from the music industry. But then she started songwriting again, which led to a third solo CD. After that, the couple decided to begin create music together.
