Some food is created to look like art. The art on display at Conrad Grebel University College was created to make you think about food.
I mentioned the Just Food exhibit a couple of weeks ago and had a chance to go and see it today. And the images are certainly thought provoking. The one posted is titled "Food is a Human Right" by Bert Monterona, an artist from the Philippines.
The exhibit includes pieces from 19 artists in 13 countries including seven Canadians. Some of the art depicts the sense of community and celebration associated with food, while other pieces speak to the conflict with food which can lead to death for those without it.
The power of image, especially as it relates to a social concern, really comes through in this exhibit. I've known how much of an impact art can have but this exhibit really demonstrates this. And, while my job as a journalist has given me the information about food security (or lack thereof), these images really bring to life the importance of food in today's society for both those who have and don't have access to it.
Just Food is on display Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the main atrium of Conrad Grebel University College (140 Westmount Rd. N, Waterloo). For more, check http://www.grebel.uwaterloo.ca/aboutgrebel/releases/2011_14_justfood.shtml
