Arts Connection for October 20, 2011 - Marc Martel - downhere, Queen Extravaganza

Marc Martel, a singer/songwriter with downhere, has been hailed as the second coming of Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury after an audition video of the song “Somebody to Love” was uploaded to Youtube about a month ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dREKkAk628I). Since then Martel has been has been caught up in a whirlwind of interviews—including a guest spot on the Ellen show.

Christopher van Donkelaar was initially trained in the traditional methods of painting icons by monks. Now, as his website (http://www.vandonkelaar.ca/) says, “he’s taken the bedrock of the iconographic art form as the foundation for his own unflinching and inexhaustible curiosity.”

ArtsWatch: What I've learned about publishing

Reviewing a journal the other day I realized it’s been just over a year since I found out that Chasing the Wind won the 2010 Word Alive Press publishing contest in the non-fiction category.
 
It’s been a whirlwind of a year beginning with editing, reading proofs and finally having the published books arrive on my doorstep. There was book launch, interviews and media appearances. And there was the pleasure of finding copies of Chasing the Wind in Chapters and Christian bookstores from here to Chatham.

The act of writing is a lonely endeavour. It’s you, the blank word document, a blinking cursor and a keypad. So finding others who understand the pain of the lonely writer is a joy.  Helena Smrcek's has appeared in Beyond Ordinary Living, Faith & Friends and ChristianWeek (for which I also write). Helena’s bringing a Word Weavers group to the Waterloo Region and talks to us about this.
