In December 1910, two Hallelujah Lassies of the Salvation Army -- Captain Mary Lidman and Lieutenant Julia Toth came to Strathcona, Alberta to take charge of a new and growing corps.

On December 8, 1910, the Edmonton II Corps (South Edmonton) was officially opened. For the next 80 years, in three different locations, the corps served the spiritual and physical needs of Edmontonians. William Booth's message of 'heart to God, hand to man,' was not lost by its members.

Fifty years after It opened, needing a new facility, the corps moved to the Parkallen area. In the 1980s, the corps moved again, this time to spread the Gospel to the West Edmonton area.

In all of It's phases, the corps never forgot it's main purpose of preading the love of God and the message of salvation.

Corps Sergeant-Major Robert White has been a soldier of the West Edmonton Corps since 1981. But his roots in the corps go back as far as the 1950s, when his maternal grandparents transferred to South Edmonton from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. And his paternal grandfather soldiered at South Edmonton while stationed

In Edmonton as the Correctional and Suicide Prevention Line officer.

White has been involved in many corps sections Including Sunday School, youth group, singing groups and League of Mercy. He was commissioned as Corps Sergeant-Major in 1984.

White has been a reporter with the Elk Island Triangle, reporter/managing editor with the Alberta SonShine News, editor of The Sherwood Park Booster and is presently a copy editor with The Edmonton Journal Neighbors section. White has also written articles for various Salvation Army's publications. He is presently working on a couple of other books.
